Açores, Portugal
WHY WE WENT
This was a tough decision. We wanted to take a trip on our own and wanted it to be significant but nothing beyond Europe so we hit up the islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
HOW LONG WE STAYED
May 21 - June 3, 2017
WHO WENT
Dave and Ana
WHERE WE WENT
We spent most of our time in São Miguel but also visited Pico and Faial islands.
HOW WE DID THE AÇORES
Alone. The islands were so calm that we often found ourselves completely alone. On roads. At waterfalls and hot springs. On beaches. In restaurants. Alone. We even had private horseback riding lessons.
Time change
We didn’t have Owen so the time change wasn’t an issue, the four hour time difference had no affect on us.
TransporTation
Oh man. To start the trip, our flight there was delayed by an entire day. When we finally got there we rented a car on São Miguel island and that allowed us to see it all.
We then flew to Pico island and walked around the capital.
We then took a ferry from Pico to Faial island and hired a cab to drive us around because we couldn’t find any rental cars.
We were then supposed to take the ferry back to Pico but the only airline that operates on the islands was about to go on strike so we got on the last flight back to the main island for a chance at catching our flight home.
accommodations
All AirnBnbs. We found some amazing little places for really cheap - here, here, here, here and here.
Our days
We drove around chasing waterfalls, hiked and took thermal baths. Dave ate the craziest burger, we went horseback riding and spent about four hours sitting at a tea and wine house reading books. Who are we?!
